Joomchi is an ancient Korean craft dating back 500 years whereby paper is manipulated to fuse multiple layers of suitable papers together. It is sometimes referred to as “paper felting”, the finish often resembling fabric or leather. It has amazing sculptural properties and can be formed into 3D shapes or textured forms offering endless possibilities.
Pam has taught wool-felt-making for 20 years and has been exploring various forms of paper manipulation techniques for the past five years. For her, there was a natural progression to Joomchi by initially incorporating paper into wool felt and then progressing to paper-only felting or Joomchi.
In this one day workshop we will explore the basic techniques of Joomchi. You will complete an artwork using multiple layers of coloured paper incorporating interesting cut-out designs. We will discuss the many possibilities of further embellishment using stitch, burning or sculpting, perhaps leading the way to further workshops.
All materials and equipment will be supplied as well as a scrumptious lunch and morning and afternoon teas. The aim is to have fun, enjoy the company of other like-minded people while creating great art all in the relaxed atmosphere of Dairing’s studio and garden.
A word of warning: The agitation takes some time to complete so some level of dexterity is necessary.
